Japan Wins WBC Title for the Third Time, Boosting Prices of Stocks Bearing WBC-related Names, including Otani Kogyo (5939)

[Nikkei QUICK News] Japan won the 5th World Baseball Classic (WBC) for the third time in three events. The WBC is an international baseball tournament of national teams, with the final game held on the morning of March 22 (JST). The success of the Japanese team “Samurai Japan,” which defeated the defending champion, the U.S.A., has boosted an interest in selective buying of WBC-related stocks. The search for stocks associated with the names of players who showed an outstanding performance during the games became more active. Some stocks soared in the Tokyo stock market during the tournament, including on March 22.

In the morning session, the stock prices of sports-related companies ZETT (8135) and DESCENTE (8114), which deal in baseball products, rose sharply. The stocks of companies featuring famous players as their image characters also attracted investors.

Even more conspicuous was the search for stocks of the companies bearing the last name of outstanding players. When Munetaka Murakami hit a solo home run just before the start of the morning session on March 22, Murakami Corporation (7292) started the day with a bid quotation. The stock price was temporarily up 18% from the previous day. After Kazuma Okamoto hit a home run in the fourth inning, sharp gains in stock prices were seen in Okamoto Industries (5122), Okamoto Machine Tool Works (6125), and Okamoto Glass (7746).

During the tournament, Shohei Ohtani made an outstanding performance as a “Two-Way” player, both pitcher and hitter. On March 8, when the WBC began, the stock price of Otani Kogyo (5939) started to rise. On March 16, the price rose to 16,050 yen, more than three times the closing price on March 7 (4805 yen), the day before the WBC kicked off. The company’s stock price went into a downtrend thereafter. On the afternoon of March 22, after the WBC champion was decided, the sell-off swelled even further. A spokesperson for Otani Kogyo told Nikkei QUICK News, “We receive many inquiries from the media. However, since we are not a sponsor and have nothing to do with Shohei Ohtani, we have no particular comment to make.”

The two-week battle of the Samurai Japan team, which won the world championship for the first time in three events, is over. Will the successes of the players help put the stock market on an upward trajectory?
